New Exhibit: Awol Erizku | Menace II Society @ Night Gallery

Menace II Society by Awol Erizku @ Night Gallery

The Night Gallery recently opened their first Awol Erizku exhibition on September 9th and will keep it open until October 7th, 2017.

The exhibition is titled “Menace II Society” and tackles America’s history of institutionalized racism from the late 1960s to the present day, and beyond. “Menace II Society” features paintings on corrugated metal, plastic sheets, plywood, and other materials as a statement against the Eurocentric standards of using a traditional white canvas. The body of work consists largely of images taken from the Black Panther Coloring Book, a banned children’s book by James Teemer, and these images have been filled in by Erizku. The vibrancy of the paint and the scale of the images create a dynamic interaction between the art and the audience, asking viewers to contemplate a landscape of history, violence, inequality, and injustice in America, amongst other things.
