The Iziko South African National Gallery presents A Resilient Visionary: Poetic Expressions of David Koloane, a collection of works by South African artist David Koloane, on display now. Curated by Thembinkosi Goniwe, this collection seeks to celebrate Koloane’s contributions to the South African art scene through his depictions of Johannesburg, South Africa during his time. Koloane recreates the parts about urban life that fascinated him, from calm everyday life to jazz scenes and traffic jams. Koloane’s work is known for the aesthetic dimensions that he adds to these scenes of everyday life, making artistic choices that make these everyday scenes resonate on an emotional level. Through all of this Koloane’s work provides an excellent window into what it meant to be Black under the regime of colionalism and apartheid of his moment.
