Deborah Roberts’ If they come is currently on view at the Stephen Friedman Gallery. Her first solo exhibition uses collages and mixed media to open a discussion on Black bodies being objectified in the media, and uses her art to subvert those media representations. Her collages of Black boys and girls portrays them with power in their stature and gaze, while their collaged composition reflects the misrepresentations they are subject to. Roberts’ poignant piece is a testament to art’s capacity to capture the expansiveness of Black life and the Black experience when created by Black artists themselves.
