Brooklyn-based artist Jon Key’s Violet Alabama reflects on growing up as a Black, queer man in rural Alabama with an emphasis on generational tension. Each theme — southern-ness, Blackness, queerness, and family — are all emphasized with the use of the colors green, black, violet, and red. Currently on display at Steve Turner, Los Angeles, this visually-striking collection is Key’s third solo exhibition and his first in Los Angeles.
