Kumasi J. Barnett’s The Amazing Black-Man opens at Lowell Ryan Projects on July 13. Using classic comic books as his base, Barnett’s latest exhibit depicts the Black man in opposition with his arch nemeses—the police and white supremacy. His innovative take turns classic superhero tales on their heads by causing observers to question the true meaning of justice with parallels to U.S. systematic racism in real life. However, it also empowers the Black protagonist with repeated stories of triumph over and over again. The meaning of this is ambiguous—is it really a superpower to get back up again and again, or is his need to do so a sign that it may never end?
