What does it mean to constantly expose oneself to vulnerability and discomfort? Why do we do it so often? These questions are explored in Lila de Magalhaes’ exhibit, Cupid of Chaos, now on display at François Ghebaly. Using a variety of textured materials such as wool, glaze, thread, fabric, and clay, de Magalhaes represents this phenomenon by showing how people make physical and symbolic extensions of their bodies in a range of different forms. Using distinct materials and a soft aesthetic, de Magalhaes finds a way to make human discomfort and exposure deeply beautiful.
