Monique Meloche in Chicago is presenting new paintings and drawings by artist Maia Cruz Palileo in a new solo show titled All The While I Thought You Had Received This. Inspired by her Filipino heritage, Cruz Palileo conducted research at Chicago’s Newberry Library — through the Jerome Foundation’s Travel and Study Program Grant — searched through manuscripts, historical photography and archival materials to learn more about the Philippines. Her works in All The While I Thought You Had Received This are representation of her research, bringing together Spanish colonialism, the Filipino-American war, and Cruz Palileo’s own understanding of a fractured and complex past.
An opening reception for Cruz Palileo will be held Saturday, February 2 from 4 to 6 p.m, and will lead a walkthrough of the exhibition at 5:20 p.m.
