Martine Gutierrez | Indigenous Woman and MARTINE JEANS @ RYAN LEE (New York)
RYAN LEE will concurrently present Indigenous Woman and MARTINE JEANS by artist Martine Gutierrez, who documents her personal identity and transformations by embodying imagined personas in various media. Gutierrez serves as editor-in-chief of Indigenous Woman, an independent art publication dedicated to celebrating Mayan Indian culture and examining the intersection of indigeneity and self-image. Through it, she conveys the fluidity of her own identity amid the binaries of gender and ethnicity she experiences.
In MARTINE JEANS, Gutierrez promotes a fictitious brand of jeans inspired by denim advertisements from the 1990s that draws attention to the media’s wrongful exploitation of LGBTQ individuals and people of color like herself. Ultimately, Gutierrez hopes that both pieces perpetuate mutual understanding between objects and their viewers, giving allies and activists the power to change the world.
The opening reception for Indigenous Woman will be September 6 from 6 to 8pm.
