Night Gallery will present Glass Sabbath, the first solo exhibition of new works at the gallery by Melanie Schiff. Schiff’s ethereal photographs challenge the physicality of objects by removing them from the contexts in which they are most commonly used. Thus, audiences are connected to the objects by their form, shape, and texture rather than by their function. In a style reminiscent of still life paintings, Schiff juxtaposes loaves of bread with velvet blankets; places shattered glass panes in the sunlight; depicts a woman’s lactating breast in a way that highlights its organic geometries.
Installed at staggered heights, the photographs call for a meditative reading as they require the audiences to peruse slowly and carefully. Schiff experiments with multiple exposures, light leaks, and framing techniques, thereby grounding the works in their photographic medium. But no matter the adjustments made, Schiff’s photographs elevate mundane objects from their physical associations to a plane of higher being.
The opening reception for Glass Sabbath will be held on September 15 from 7 to 10pm.
