Waiting at Goodman Gallery Cape Town is an exhibition of new work by one of South Africa’s preeminent artists, Sam Nhlengethwa, exploring the myriad ways people find themselves occupied by the state of human existence. The works question what we are all waiting for and, in searching for answers, only arises more questions upon closer inspection. The artist speaks to a universal experience: “We all see people waiting and sometimes we becomes victims of waiting.”
Works depict diverse scenes: an empty state of instruments, a person loitering near a pole, a woman sitting alone, a group of roadside commuters. The scenarios are created from lithographic prints, tapestry, and mixed media collage. The stories lived by the figures reflect the experiences of everyday South Africans and draws viewers’ attention to this distinction. Finally, Nhlengethwa reflects on the harsh, under-the-surface realities that are often hidden from view.
