Los Angeles-based artist Sarah Awad will present her first exhibition at Night Gallery, Double Field, a series of paintings depicting figures that overtake their respective fields of canvas as they nearly double the scale of their viewers. The bodies in her paintings are abstract and fragmented, often washed out by her geometric swathes but still unmistakable in the way they hint at faces and other anatomical pieces. Only when mounted on walls are the figures spatially perceptible as human bodies.
Once visible, Awad’s characters live internal narratives evident through motifs influenced by mirrors as surfaces for the doubling of bodies. The gazes of the characters engender an emotional connection with viewers, as they watch themselves and are simultaneously watched by others. Certain works, including one that evokes nude figures in a sauna room, invite audiences into the intimate lives of these abstract beings.
The opening reception for Double Field will be held on September 15 from 7 to 10pm.
