For Fondazione Prada Osservatorio, Theaster Gates has conceived a participatory exhibit centered on the artworks of two photographers — Moneta Sleet Jr. and Isaac Sutton — who previously created work for Ebony and Jet, two landmark publications for black American audiences. The magazines’ legacies feature more than 4 million images and have contributed to the artistic and cultural identities of contemporary black Americans.
Sleet and Sutton’s photographs depict black women engaging in narratives of politics, sports and beauty. Gates wanted to celebrate the lesser-seen lives of black women through a series of never-before-seen images from the collection. Visitors are also invited to freely explore the visual archives by pulling out single frames and choosing how to display them outside the structures that hold them. In addition to the photo collection, Gates will show a documentary video exploring the architectural office spaces of the publications.
