Ruins Decorated will be Yinka Shonibare’s first exhibition with Goodman Gallery. He will be showcasing this artwork in South Africa in the wake of the removal of the statue of Cecil Rhodes. The statue of Cecil Rhodes demonstrated colonialism which led to a movement called #Rhodesmustfall. To many protestors it was a symbolism of oppression and grew to include institutional racism and a lack of racial unity on the university campus. Through this exhibition, Shonibare will be asking questions of how to shape modern African identities while also having difficult conversations surrounding cultural appropriation.
